S.M.A.R.T. Goals


S.M.A.R.T. is an acronym that you can use to guide your goal setting and dramatically increase your chances of success.

Specific - the more specific you are the easier your goal is to achieve.
Measurable - so you know when you have achieved it.
Attainable - you can DO something about it? is it within your control?
Relevant / realistic - Goals need to be both challenging to inspire you AND realistic so you set yourself up for success.
Time-based - has a deadline and creates a sense of urgency compelling you to take action.

There are various templates that you can find that use S.M.A.R.T. goals setting, however the most important thing is to make sure whatever goals you set for yourself, they meet all the S.M.A.R.T. criteria. It is also helpful, if you state your goals in the positive and present tense.

The table below gives some examples of satisfying each criteria comparing a simple goal to a S.M.A.R.T. goal:

I NOW gradually reduce my sugary drink consumption every week in order to eliminate it.

Relevant / Realistic
Make sure the goal is consistent with your other goals and will aid you in achieving your long term goal, mission or vision.

I want to change my lifestyle.

I NOW improve my lifestyle by making conscious food decisions at every meal whilst focusing on protein and vegetables.

Have a time frame for accomplishing your goal and create urgency to take action towards your goal.

I want to be at my ideal weight.

I NOW achieve my ideal weight by 31st December 2017.
